Nicole Lurie for Government Executive Magazine

Back in August, I visited the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to photograph Nicole Lurie who is the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.  When talking with the team at Government Executive Magazine, we decided that we wanted to shoot in a lighter more airy style in addition to the darker look we’ve been using.  I was all for the idea, as it’s always fun to switch things up a bit.

We first got started inside where we found a command center of sorts.  This room had it all.  Phones, computers, and a wall covered with monitors.  Once they replaced the sensitive materials on the screens with live television feeds and other graphics, we got started.  Because my time with Lurie was limited, we shot for maybe 10 minutes and then moved things outside of the building just next to the entrance.

The entire shoot didn’t last long, and with one location inside and the other out, I had to keep the lighting very simple.  Just a one light setup for both the shots, which made for an easy transition to the outside location.  Outside, the light was more of a fill than anything else.
