Washington Nationals COO Andy Feffer for Bethesda Magazine

Back in May, I had the great opportunity of photographing Washington Nationals COO Andy Feffer for Bethesda Magazine. When it comes to the term ‘Natitude’, he’s a walking example of it.

After I got word of the assignment, I immediately went into planning mode. I would have 30 minutes with Andy and wanted to use as much of the ballpark that my time allowed. This meant keeping the setup simple and easy to move. My good friend Rich came along to help with lighting and moving gear around the stadium.

While researching the ballpark and looking at photos, I noticed how the upper deck seating casts a shadow on lower levels of the stadium. I knew I wanted to photograph Andy behind home plate while sitting in a shadowed area. By using an app called Sun Surveyor (App Store, Google Play), I was able to calculate when the sun would be exactly where I needed it to be for the shot.

We arrived 30 minutes before the start time to get set up and do some quick light tests. As I said, I wanted to keep the lighting simple. I used one PCB Einstein with my Calumet 22-inch diffused beauty dish. When Andy arrived, we were ready to go and got the shot behind home plate within five minutes. That gave us plenty of time to get to our second location and photograph Andy in the outfield.

Again, I used one light with a diffused beauty dish at camera left. We shot for another 5-10 minutes and wrapped it up there in the outfield. Andy did a great job and it was a pleasure meeting and working with him. He’s an incredibly nice guy.
